Dannelly was born in Würzburg, Germany, but he relocated to Baltimore, Maryland, with his family when he was eleven years old. He went to a Catholic primary school, Arlington Baptist High School in Baltimore, and a Jewish summer camp throughout his education. He was brought up in the Catholic faith. He was kicked out of the first grade for striking a nun, and then he was kicked out of the high school he characterises as “one of the toughest institutions in the country” for having an excessive amount of demerits. In senior year of high school, he began to have doubts about his sexual orientation, stating, “I remember I’d pray every night that I wasn’t homosexual, and please God, please God, whatever I could do—just don’t let this happen.

” He later admitted that he had been lying about his prayers. When he came out as gay when he was seventeen, his parents immediately kicked him out of the home, despite the fact that they later came to embrace his sexuality. Before making his debut in 2004 with the evangelical parody film Saved!, which he directed and co-authored with Michael Urban, Dannelly wrote and directed the short film “He Bop,” which was released in 2000. After the shooting at Columbine High School in 1999, when he says it brought him “back to [his] roots” at a Christian high school, he started writing the screenplay for Saved! and didn’t stop until it was finished. When they were students at the American Film Institute Conservatory, the two of them started creating the screenplay. A significant portion of the narrative was inspired by the author’s own personal experiences inside the “conservative Christian subculture,” such as attending Christian rock concerts, referring to himself as “this homosexual kid at a Christian school,” and experiencing visions of Jesus.
