Jerome Alan West was born on May 28th, 1938. He was a professional basketball player in the National Basketball Association (NBA) who played for the Los Angeles Lakers. His nicknames included “Mr. Clutch”, for his ability to make a big play in a key situation such as his famous buzzer-beating 60-foot shot that tied Game 3 of the 1970 NBA Finals against the New York Knicks; “the Logo”, in reference to his silhouette being the basis for the NBA logo; “Mr. Outside”, in reference to his perimeter play with the Los Angeles Lakers and “Zeke from Cabin Creek” for the creek near his birthplace of Chelyan, West Virginia.

Despite their elimination from the tournament, he was named the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Final Four. After that, he began a career with the Los Angeles Lakers and served as the co-captain of the United States basketball team that won the gold medal at the 1960 Olympics.
