At Simon Fraser University, I studied clinical psychology and earned a PhD degree with a child clinical focus. I have been working in the area of juvenile mental health for the last 15 years, and throughout that time, I have accumulated a broad spectrum of expertise providing community-based mental health services to children, adolescents, and families. Because of my wide background, I’ve had the chance to discover how young people like to be handled in clinical settings and how to create therapeutic connections, both of which are essential for achieving success in treatment.I have also held positions at the Maples Adolescent Treatment Centre and for Child and Youth Mental Health in Delta.
In both of these capacities, I was responsible for providing assessment and treatment services to young people who exhibited severe emotional distress and behavioural challenges. These issues included conduct problems, delinquency, depression, and self-harm, among other things. In the course of my studies at Simon Fraser University, I participated in a research programme with the objective of eliciting the viewpoints of adolescents regarding the provision of mental health services, with a particular emphasis on the manner in which mental health professionals can cultivate therapeutic relationships in a manner that will resonate with young people and increase the likelihood of favourable outcomes. In addition to the work I conduct in private practise, I am now lecturing in the Department of Psychology at Simon Fraser University, where I am instructing undergraduate students in topics such as Adolescent Development and Developmental Psychopathology.
