James Tolkan Bio

James Stewart Tolkan is a well-known American actor who was born on June 20th, 1931. In the films Back to the Future and Back to the Future Part II, as well as Back to the Future Part III, he played the characters of Mr. Strickland and Marshal Strickland, respectively. These performances have brought him the most fame. Other parts in films such as “Love and Death”, “Top Gun”, “Masters of the Universe”, and “Dick Tracy” stand out as particularly notable. Tolkan was the son of Dale Nichols and Ralph M. Tolkan, a cattle trader, and was born in Calumet, Michigan. His father’s name was Tolkan.

His educational background includes time spent at the University of Iowa, Coe College, the Actors Studio, and Eastern Arizona College. Tolkan participated in the United States Navy aboard the USS Sandoval; however, he had a problem with his heart, and he was released from the service after a year for reasons related to his health. Tolkan is most recognized for his performance as the authoritarian Hill Valley High School principal, Gerald Strickland, in the 1985 film Back to the Future. In this film, Tolkan’s character derisively refers to Marty McFly, his father, and Biff Tannen as “slackers.” In the 1989 sequel Back to the Future Part II, in which anonymous gang members conduct a drive-by attack on him in a dystopian 1985, he repeated the part he had played in the first film. He again refers to the criminals as “slackers” when he fires back at them.
